How to Choose Chairs For a Farmhouse Table
A farmhouse table is one of those pieces of furniture that instantly makes a room feel welcoming. I love the character of a beautiful wooden table, particularly one with a slightly rustic or aged finish, but I think the chairs you choose to go with it are just as important. They can completely change the feel of the room, whether you want something traditional and country-inspired or a more relaxed, eclectic look.
When choosing chairs for an English farmhouse table, I tend to look at three things first: the style of the chair, the colour and finish of the wood, and, of course, how comfortable they are. There are so many beautiful wooden chair styles to choose from that you certainly don’t have to buy a matching dining set.

Think About the Style of Your Farmhouse Table
I always start by looking at the table itself. Is it a traditional farmhouse table with lots of character and a chunky wooden top? Is it painted rather than natural? Or perhaps it has a more contemporary shape that would work well with a mixture of old and new furniture?
The style of the table gives a starting point, but the chairs don’t necessarily need to match it exactly. In fact, chairs that contrast slightly with the table can make a dining room feel much more interesting and collected rather than as though everything has been bought as one matching set.
Farmhouse tables are often larger and more substantial than standard dining tables, so lightweight or overly delicate chairs can look out of place. A good rule is to choose chairs with enough visual weight to complement the table without overwhelming the room, which is why sturdy wooden chairs are such a good choice.

Fiddle Back Chairs for a Traditional Country Look
If you wanted to create a classic farmhouse or country dining room, a fiddle back chair would be one of my first choices. The distinctive curved wooden back gives this style its name and adds plenty of traditional character.
Fiddle back chairs with a natural or lightly painted finish alongside a large wooden farmhouse table have a timeless quality that works beautifully in both older homes and more contemporary country interiors.
If the room already has lots of traditional features, you might choose natural wood. Alternatively, painted fiddle back chairs can be a lovely way of introducing a little colour.

Slat Back Chairs for a Simple, Timeless Look
Slat back chairs are another style that works wonderfully with farmhouse tables. Their straightforward wooden backs give them a slightly more pared-back appearance than fiddle back chairs, while still having that unmistakable country feel.
They work particularly well if you want the table to remain the main feature of the room. A simple wooden slat back chair doesn't compete with a beautiful farmhouse table, but it still adds plenty of warmth and texture.
Slat back chairs are particularly easy to mix with other furniture. They can work just as well in a traditional farmhouse kitchen as they can in a more modern country-inspired dining room.

Spindle Back Chairs Add Plenty of Character
Spindle back chairs have a lovely, relaxed charm. The turned wooden spindles create detail without making the chair feel too heavy, which makes them a particularly good option around a substantial farmhouse table.
The way the curves and vertical lines of a spindle back chair contrast with the solid, horizontal shape of a wooden table can add great texture to your space. My dining chairs can also be found in a variety of finishes, from natural timber to painted versions, so there are plenty of ways to make them work with your existing colour scheme.

Wooden Dining Armchairs for the Ends of the Table
If you have a larger farmhouse table, it can be a great idea to use wooden dining armchairs at either end. They give the table a more substantial appearance and create a natural sense of importance at the head of the table.
A wooden armchair can also be particularly comfortable, especially if you spend a lot of time around the dining table. It isn't just somewhere to eat; the dining table might also be where you work, read, have coffee with friends or sit with the family.
You can then use simpler wooden dining chairs along the sides of the table, giving a coordinated look without everything being identical.

Don't Be Afraid to Paint Your Wooden Chairs
One of my favourite ways to give a farmhouse dining area some personality is with painted wooden chairs.
Not every chair has to be the same colour. In fact, painting the chairs in different complementary shades can create a wonderfully relaxed and informal look.
Soft white, sage green, pale blue, grey and muted earthy shades can all work beautifully with natural timber. If you have a particularly rustic wooden table, you might even choose several different styles of chairs, but painted in the same colour, to give the room a more collected, country-house feel.
Another option is to choose the same style of chair but paint each one a slightly different colour. This keeps the shapes consistent while allowing you to be a little more playful with the colour scheme.
Do My Dining Chairs Have to Match?
Not at all. Farmhouse tables are one of the easiest pieces of furniture to style with mismatched chairs.
You might combine fiddleback chairs with slat backs, or use spindle back chairs along the sides with wooden armchairs at either end, or a whole mix of different styles around the table. The key is to make the combination look intentional.
A great tip is to look for something that ties the chairs together. It could be the same type of wood, a similar colour palette, a repeated shape or simply the fact that all of the chairs have a traditional wooden character.

Consider the Colour of the Wood
If you’re choosing natural wooden chairs, you should consider how their finish will sit alongside the table.
The wood doesn’t have to be an exact match. A warm oak chair can look lovely with a slightly darker farmhouse table, for example, while painted chairs can provide an even stronger contrast.
If your table has lots of beautiful natural grain and character, you could keep the chairs relatively simple so that the wood remains the star of the room. Alternatively, if the table is more understated, you could use the chairs to introduce more detail through a fiddle back, spindle back or decorative wooden design.

Think About Comfort as Well as Looks
Comfort is just as important as looks when it comes to choosing seating. There's little point choosing chairs that look perfect if everyone is uncomfortable after sitting down for half an hour.
Look for a good-sized seat, a supportive back and a comfortable height in relation to the table. Wooden chairs can also be softened with simple seat cushions, which is a practical way to add comfort and another opportunity to introduce colour or pattern.
For a particularly traditional farmhouse look, I love the idea of simple fabric cushions in checks, stripes, florals or natural linen tones.
The best farmhouse dining spaces don't feel overly coordinated. They feel comfortable, practical and full of character. By choosing chairs that complement your table while still reflecting your own style, you can create a dining space that feels welcoming and personal rather than simply matching.
